Obituary

Guy John Hancock passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020, at his home in Oak Harbor, Washington. He was born on October 31, 1940, in Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire England, to Harry and Vera (Lindop) Hancock.

Guy’s parents emigrated to Perth Western Australia in 1952, when Guy was 11. After Kent St. High School, he attended the Australian Post Office Communication’s College graduating top of his class. After serving in the telecommunications branch for five years, during which he also served in the CMF, Citizen’s Military Force, in 1966, he joined Western Geophysical and was involved in oil exploration and spent the rest of his career, 39 years, working as an electronics engineer specializing in computers. This job took him to many parts of the world: to Africa, Asia, and Europe, finally coming to Houston, Texas, for what was to be 2 years but ended up being 27 years.

During a visit to his company’s Australian headquarters in Sydney, he met and married his wife, Helen, on April 28, 1971. They were very happily married almost 49 years. They were the parents of 2 children, David and Katharine.

On retirement from the company, now Schlumberger, he and wife, Helen, moved to a cooler climate, Oak Harbor, Washington. Guy loved living in Oak Harbor; he loved the climate which made it possible for him to grow wonderful fruit and flowers on their 2.5 acres of property just out of Oak Harbor. Guy was able to indulge his other hobby, woodworking. He enjoyed the creative process and loved to design things; he designed and built a wonderfully functional house for their small flock of chickens, and often said that he would have loved to be an architect. He was a gentle man and a gentleman in the best sense of the word. In his last days, he found peace and comfort relaxing in his chair with his favorite cat, Pepper, beside him.

Guy was a member of Grace by the Sea Anglican Church in Oak Harbor, and he enjoyed contributing his talents to the church. He could seemingly fix anything. He served on the Vestry for 4 years when the church transitioned to another location in the city of Oak Harbor.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Vera Hancock, and his eldest brother, Ken.

Guy is survived by his spouse, Helen, of Oak Harbor, Washington; his two children, David and Katharine (Taylor) of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia; his grandchildren, Jillian and Audrey; his sister, Lyn (Sach) and brother-in-law, Geoff; his brother, Rex, and sister-in-law, Fay; and his nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to send a very special "Thank you!" to Dr. Peter Nelson, MD; Nurse Practitioner, Katie Nega; and the entire nursing staff at the Prostate Oncology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical Center, for their exceptional and loving care for Guy.

A memorial service will be held at Grace by the Sea Anglican Church at a later date when gathering restrictions have been lifted.
