James C. Byron
James (Jim) Clark Byron passed away with his family by his side on Monday, June 29th, 2020 at the home of son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cheryl Byron. He was 89 years of age. Since the passing of his beloved wife in 2019, Anne Mason Byron, Jim resided in Gilbert, Arizona to be closer to family.
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, on August 20th, 1930, he spent most of his childhood in Bay City. He was an athletic child competing in speed-skating and playing football. He graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in General Education.
After college, Jim served in the US Air Force. He enlisted in 1951 and until 1960 was active duty. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, GCMDL CLP W/4 Br LPS (14 Mar 57 - 13 Mar 60), SO H-156/60, HQ KTTC AFLSA W/1 Br OLC (1 Mar 59). He later returned as a reservist for 17 years to finish his service; retiring from the US Air Force Reserve in 1990.
He met his wife, Anne, and they were married in 1950. From 1973 to 1980, Jim and his wife Anne owned and operated a hotel in Westfield, VT. Jim and Anne moved to Whidbey Island, WA in 1996, after visiting their children in 1991 and falling in love with it.
Jim was a humble man who enjoyed reading, collecting air force plane models, and other eclectic mementos of his past. He liked to take cruises with Anne, spending time with family, and driving his cars.
Jim is survived by his three children, Bob, Kathie, and Jon; two grandchildren, Christa Mann and Elizabeth Oh; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Chesley, Jonathan Perkins, and E Mann. Those who preceded Jim in death are his parents and wife, Anne.
