Obituary for Stanley E Fleharty
Our beloved father, grandpa, and great-grandpa passed away on March 1, 2020, at 89 years old.
Stan was the eldest son of three boys, of C.D. and Gwendolyn Fleharty, born on Jan. 30, 1931, in Hastings, N.E. He grew up in Hastings as well as in Cheyenne, Wyo., and joined the United States Navy at age 17.
Stan met and married the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Murphy, in Bremerton, Wash., on Feb. 11, 1950. They traveled with the Navy and were stationed several places including Portsmouth, N.H., and Taipei, Taiwan, developing many lifelong friendships along the way.
Pat and Stan started their family with son, Mike, in 1951 and daughter, Susan, in 1955. They ultimately settled on beautiful Whidbey Island, Wash., where they loved the weather and enjoyed being active members of the community well after Stan’s 20 years in the Navy. Following his retirement from the Navy as DKC Chief, he worked briefly as a car salesman for Maylor Ford, spent many years as a loan officer at Everett Trust and Savings Bank (later Olympic Bank), completed construction/remodel projects on Victory Homes (military), and was a courier on the naval base.
Stan coached Little League, was active in Kiwanis, and was a Freemason. In his early years, he played some basketball, golfed, fished and camped, and he loved watching sports — baseball, football, basketball. He and Pat bowled in a league; this was his time to socialize — drink some beer and tell jokes. He always had candy to share with the staff during medical appointments, or at the bank, where they affectionately called him “the candy man.” He enjoyed playing cribbage and doing crosswords puzzles, eating cookies and doughnuts, and drinking coffee. Stan loved his little dachshund, Maddy.
We will remember Stan for his honesty, generosity, sense of humor, and the love he had for his family and friends.
Stan was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, in 2013; parents, C.D. and Gwendolyn Fleharty; and brothers, Richard Fleharty and Mel Fleharty.
He is survived by son, Michael Fleharty; daughter, Susan Frost (Barry); grandson, Christopher (Michelle); grandson, BJ Frost (Jamie); granddaughter, Leah Frost; and great granddaughters, Taryn and McKenna Fleharty.
